About me

Dr Laura Joyner

I am a Research Fellow in Suicide Prevention at Middlesex University in London, U.K.. Currently, I am working on a 3-year NIHR funded project looking at whether smart surveillance technology can effectively reduce suicides and suicide attempts in public locations.

Research Interests

I am broadly interested in how technology and digital environments influence judgements and behaviour, particularly in the context of identity, moral reasoning and affect.

In 2023 I completed my PhD in Psychology at the University of Westminster. My thesis, “Why Do People Spread Disinformation on Social Media? The Role of Social Identity and Perceived Morality” can be found on Westminster’s Research Repository.

Prior to retraining in Psychology, I worked in communications and digital marketing for the fashion and retail industry for over 7 years during a period of rapid digital growth. This allowed me to see first hand the impact of social media on news communication and media consumption, consumer behaviour and culture, and ultimately led me to pursue my PhD topic.

I also hold my Professional Diploma in Digital Marketing (Digital Marketing Institute). My experience working with a range of digital platforms has provided me with a level of technical understanding that has helped to guide my personal and collaborative research.

Teaching

I am an Associate Fellow of the HEA (AFHEA) and have delivered lectures, run seminars and workshops, and supervised postgraduate students across a range of core modules (including Social Psychology and Research Methods). I am also passionate about inclusive teaching practices, particularly in the context of disability / neurodivergence.
